Teen charged with vehicular homicide by intoxication after multi-vehicle Nashville crash
An 18-year-old was charged with vehicular homicide by intoxication after a fatal multi-vehicle crash Monday night on I-24 West. Zachary Abbott, 18, is charged with vehicular homicide and ten counts of reckless endangerment after a multi-vehicle crash near Old Hickory Boulevard claimed the life of his front seat passenger, Talon Sewell, 18. An investigation indicates that Abbott was driving westbound on I-24 when he changed lanes to pass traffic but was not able to. He drove onto the right shoulder and collided with an abandoned flatbed tow truck. The passenger side of Abbott's car hit the rear of the parked truck and collided with the rear passenger side of a Jeep at the same time. The Jeep rotated and struck two other vehicles before facing the wrong way on the road. The driver of a Nissan Sentra collided head-on with the Jeep, and was sideswept by a Toyota Camry that could not avoid the crash. Sewell was ejected from Abbott's vehicle and died at the scene. Abbott and his rear passenger were transported to a hospital with only minor injuries. The driver of the Jeep and her four children, ages 12-15, were transported to a hospital with minor injuries and were released. Officers responding to the crash noticed the smell of alcohol on Abbott's breath and reported physical signs of intoxication. Abbott remains jailed on $100,000 bond.
