Taos County Sheriff Sergeant killed in fatal crash during vehicle pursuit

TAOS COUNTY, N.M. (KRQE) – A Taos County Sheriff’s Office sergeant was killed after New Mexico State Police said that during a vehicle pursuit, a TCSO deputy was making a left turn on State Road 518 when Sergeant Joseph Apodaca, driving a police motorcycle, collided with the TCSO deputy vehicle, on Friday evening. The incident occurred around 10:25 p.m. when NMSP said deputies of TCSO were attempting to locate a reckless driver on State Road 518 when the suspect was believed to have turned onto a dirt driveway near the 7200 block of State Road 518. While trying to enter the driveway, Sergeant Apodaca collided with another TCSO deputy vehicle, a marked police pickup truck. Sergeant Apodaca was pronounced dead at 11:44 p.m. by the Office of the Medical Investigator. New Mexico State Police is investigating the crash.
