Swimmer from Cape Elizabeth dies in North Carolina car crash

A former Maine state champion swimmer is dead after a car accident in Charlotte, North Carolina, early Sunday morning. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say 22-year-old Keegan McKenney died when the BMW he was traveling in went off the road and hit a tree. All other passengers survived and were taken to a local hospital for evaluation.Police say everyone in the car was wearing a seatbelt. An investigation into whether speed and alcohol were factors is ongoing.McKenney attended Queens University of Charlotte and competed on the swim team. In a Facebook post, the team called McKenney, "a cherished teammate, friend, and member of the Queens family whose impact will never be forgotten."While at Cape Elizabeth High School, McKenney broke several school records and helped his team win the 2022 Class B Boys state swimming title. He was named 2022 Varsity Maine Boys' Swimmer of the Year by the Portland Press Herald.
