Suspected DUI driver crashes into ambulance, injures 2 medics in Salinas
A suspected DUI driver was arrested after allegedly crashing head-on into an AMR ambulance that was responding to a medical emergency on Saturday night, according to Salinas police.The crash happened at about 10:41 p.m. on East Boronda Road. Police said the ambulance was traveling eastbound with its lights and siren activated when it was struck head-on by a Chevy Cruze driven by 26-year-old Armando Ortiz Mendoza, who was going west.Officers determined Mendoza crossed over the double yellow lines into oncoming traffic, causing the crash.Both medical personnel inside the ambulance were injured and taken to local hospitals for treatment. Mendoza was also hurt and transported to a local hospital.During the investigation, officers determined Mendoza was driving under the influence. The police said he later provided a breath sample of 0.20% blood alcohol content, more than twice the legal limit.Mendoza was later booked into jail on felony DUI charges."Driving under the influence is not a mistake without consequences. In this case, two emergency medical professionals were injured while trying to help someone else," said police in a social media post.
