Suspect in hit-and-run at Tempe bar before fatal accident, police report
A young woman, age 19, who had been at a bar in Tempe that had recently faced issues related to underage drinking, was connected to a tragic hit-and-run incident by the police department. The fatal collision occurred at Rural Rd. and Lemon St. in Tempe early on September 14. An 18-year-old motorcyclist was first hit by a self-driving car and then by a white Chevrolet Camaro whose driver fled the scene. Detectives, through various investigative methods, identified the Camaro driver as a 19-year-old woman from Tempe. She turned herself in several hours after the collision. The woman visited Tempe Tavern before the incident and is now facing charges related to not stopping at the collision site. This unfortunate event and ongoing concerns about underage access at Tempe Tavern led the police to conduct a second operation to check liquor-law compliance, with the second operation revealing a significant number of underage individuals at the bar. Multiple arrests were made for various violations during this compliance check. The investigation into the enforcement operation regarding underage drinking is still ongoing.
