Suspect in deadly East Helena high-speed chase released on bail; trial scheduled

William Bart Stuart, a 52-year-old man from Helena, appeared in state district court on Tuesday to face charges of felony vehicular homicide while under the influence, felony criminal endangerment, and felony fleeing or eluding a peace officer. During the arraignment, Stuart pleaded not guilty, a common step in criminal cases in district court. The charges stem from a November crash in East Helena that resulted in the death of 69-year-old Terry Lamping and critical injuries to her husband, 76-year-old Phil Lamping. Stuart, who has a history of four previous DUI convictions, is currently out on bond set at $500,000. The crash occurred after Stuart was stopped by Montana Highway Patrol on Canyon Ferry Road, allegedly then speeding off at up to 115 miles per hour, crashing through a fence into the Lampings' home. A passenger in Stuart's vehicle told officers he had consumed 14 to 15 drinks before the crash. A local law firm is assisting the Lamping family by monitoring Stuart's actions, after reports that he was seen drinking in bars post-accident. To help the Lampings with unexpected financial challenges like funeral, medical expenses, and time away from work, a GoFundMe has been set up. Stuart's trial is scheduled for May 18 next year with Judge McMahon.
