Suspect in custody after fatal vehicle versus bicycle crash

One person is dead and a suspect is in custody after a vehicle versus bicycle incident that occurred Saturday in Albuquerque.According to a criminal complaint, witnesses told police that a vehicle driven by Brent Curley turned eastbound from Sycamore Street Southeast onto Central Avenue Southeast around 6:15 a.m. Saturday. The vehicle veered into the ART bus lane, cut between two bicyclists and struck one of the cyclists near Central Avenue Southeast and Maple Street Southeast. Court records say the victim, identified as Maykel Garcia, was taken to a local hospital but did not survive his injuries.According to court documents, witnesses told police they heard Curley's vehicle's engine accelerate before the crash. Officers at the scene found an open container of alcohol in Curley's vehicle.Court records say Curley denied any alcohol use, but told police he did consume medical cannabis before the crash. He refused to take a field sobriety test.Curley has been charged with vehicular homicide, violation of open container laws, unsafe passing on the left side and failure to yield right-of-way. He is being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center.
