SUNY Potsdam student dies after being struck by car, driver arrested
A SUNY Potsdam sophomore was killed after an early morning hit-and-run on Saturday. Potsdam police say they were called to Pierrepont Avenue for a report of a pedestrian struck by a car just after 3:30 a.m. 20-year-old Emily Mae Smith from Greenville was taken to Canton Potsdam Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The suspected driver, 18-year-old Jakob Krise from Brasher Falls, fled the scene. Police were able to locate him shortly before 7:30 a.m and arrest him.He is facing multiple charges, including driving while intoxicated and leaving the scene of a fatal crash.Smith was a student at SUNY Potsdam and a member of the women's basketball team. In a statement, the school's president, Suzanne Smith, said, "Emily was with teammates and friends at the time of the incident, and many more friends, classmates, coaches and supporters joined together with her family while she was at the hospital. We mourn Emily’s loss as one campus community, and hold her family, friends, and loved ones in our hearts at this difficult time."At graduation on Saturday, a moment of silence was held in memory of Smith.
