Spay and neuter bill, Santa Fe fatal crash, Warm and windy, Recruitment funds, Roswell battalion returns
[1] Lawmakers aim to keep funding low-cost spay and neuter services across New Mexico - A bill aimed at funding affordable spay and neuter services across the state is fighting to keep programs alive. Senate Bill 38 hopes to keep these programs funded in an effort to reduce overpopulation in animal shelters. A 2020 law made it possible to place a fee on pet food manufacturers in the state to fund affordable spay and neuter clinics, but a lawsuit filed by an advocate for those manufacturers set back the distribution of the funds. It wasn't until nearly five years later that programs started receiving some of the funds. Senate Bill 38 would stop the programs from expiring. If the bill does not pass, the programs would end once the law sunsets. [2] Motorcyclist dies in Santa Fe crash - A fatal crash remains under investigation by the Santa Fe Police Traffic Unit. Sunday, Santa Fe Police responded to a motorcycle crash. Officers and paramedics responded, but the motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. The motorcycle was identified as belonging to 31-year-old Bradley Trujillo. [3] Warming up before windy storm system hits - Mild-than-normal morning temperatures are still once again present as gustier winds are present for a few areas with very sporadic showers of rain, as well as high-elevation snow showers, beginning to form to the northwest. [4] A bill aimed at making it easier to recruit public safety officers is advancing in the Roundhouse. House Bill 255 would merge some existing funds for various law enforcement agencies into a single "Public Safety Workforce Building Program." That money would then be used to help recruit, retain, and train police, firefighters, correctional officers, district attorneys, and public defenders. The bill passed the House unanimously on Sunday and now heads to the Senate Finance Committee. [5] NM National Guard members come home to Roswell - The 515 Combat Sustainment Support Battalion returned home to Roswell after a 6-month deployment. During the welcome home ceremony at the Roswell Readiness Center, many offered speeches of thanks to the military members and their service.
