Spain train crash kills at least 21, leaves many injured
A tragic incident occurred in southern Spain on Sunday when a high-speed train derailed, switched tracks, and collided with an oncoming train, resulting in at least 39 fatalities and numerous injuries. The accident took place near Córdoba as an evening train traveling from Malaga to Madrid derailed, crashing into a train from Madrid to Huelva. Rescue efforts were immediately initiated, with 75 passengers hospitalized and an assistance center established by the Spanish Red Cross in Adamuz. Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the crash, described as peculiar by Spain’s Transport Minister Óscar Puente due to its occurrence on a recently renovated section of track. The impact primarily affected the front section of the Renfe train, with the first two carriages knocked off the track and down a slope. The inquiry into the incident is expected to take approximately a month to complete. The high-speed rail network in Spain, which is the largest in Europe, is a popular and safe mode of transport, with Renfe serving over 25 million passengers in 2024. Despite this tragedy, train services between Madrid and cities in Andalusia were disrupted, with a similar incident in 2013 being the worst train accident in Spain this century.
