South Florida child healing from sparkler mishap with serious burns

A 9-year-old boy is currently recovering in the hospital a month after sustaining serious burn injuries while playing with sparklers. Santiago Claudio, while holding a teddy bear from his hospital bed, vividly described the moment when he caught fire on his upper body. Dr. Vitini Rammin, the director of the Trauma and Burn Program at HCA Florida Kendall Hospital, shared that Santiago suffered second- and third-degree burns covering about 18% of his body. This level of injury typically necessitates multiple surgeries, skin grafts, and extended hospital stays. Santiago, who has been hospitalized since New Year's Day, underwent procedures where skin was taken from other parts of his body to help in the healing process. His mother expressed the difficulty of the situation and the quick spread of flames from a sparkler catching onto his clothes. Santiago has faced numerous surgeries and continues to be closely monitored due to infection risks, although he remains determined to get back home and play with his beloved dog, Bruno. The hospital plans on discharging Santiago on Monday and highlights the upcoming National Burn Awareness Week as an opportunity to raise awareness about firework and sparkler safety, especially when young children are left unsupervised. Last year alone, the hospital treated over 100 pediatric burn cases, emphasizing the importance of precautionary measures to prevent such accidents from occurring.
