‘Somebody almost got killed’: Bystander injured in Federal Hill motorcycle crash
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Christopher Woodley and his fiancée were enjoying a night out on Federal Hill over the weekend when he suddenly saw a motorcycle speeding toward them. The 46-year-old told 12 News he jumped in front of his fiancée without a second thought. "I had to make a split-second decision — to move out the way and think about myself, or jump in front of her," Woodley recalled. 12 News obtained video from a bystander that shows the motorcyclist revving his engine and speeding down the crowded street. The motorcyclist is then seen weaving in and out of the crowd before another person throws a trash can at him, causing him to lose control and spin out. The man was thrown from the motorcycle and into the roadway as a result. But the riderless motorcycle continued down Atwells Avenue and eventually crashed into the outdoor tent where Woodley and his fiancée were sitting "He shot the bike right at us," Woodley recalled. "We saw him hop off of the bike." Woodley told 12 News the motorcycle crashed directly into him. "I was knocked unconscious, and when I woke up there was a woman standing over me saying, 'I'm a nurse,'" Woodley recalled. "I was so dazed, I didn't even realize I had blood all over me and that my head was busted open." Woodley said he was rushed to Rhode Island Hospital where he was treated for several broken ribs, a dislocated shoulder and a gash on his head. Police said the motorcyclist, identified as Michael Carnevale, ignored the roadblocks in place for the Feast of Saint Joseph. Carnevale, 19, was also brought to Rhode Island Hospital with minor injuries. He was cited for operating a motorcycle without a license, insurance or registration. No criminal charges have been filed against Carnevale at this time. Police said more citations and charges may be filed as the investigation continues. Woodley hopes the police take his injuries into account, noting that officers never followed up with him after the crash. "We were enjoying ourselves just like everybody else," Woodley said. "I don't even know how I survived." "Somebody almost got killed," he added. Anyone who witnessed the crash or has additional information is asked to contact the Providence Police Department by calling (401) 272-3121. Mayor Brett Smiley was asked about the incident on Monday. He said police believe it was isolated, but understands the public has safety concerns. "It was a unique circumstance that shouldn't have happened," Smiley said. "The individual should be held responsible, and he will be, but we don't think it in any way endangers or jeopardizes other big events in the city this summer."
