Sister of car accident victim frustrated to still not have her sister’s remains four months later

DENVER (KDVR) - Four months after her sister was killed, one woman is frustrated that she still hasn’t received her remains. It began back in October 2025, when 41-year-old Susan Azander Gaymes was struck and killed by a vehicle in a Centennial crosswalk. FOX31's Nate Belt spoke to her sister, Monet Gaymes-Jeffers, about raising money to send her body to their home country of St. Vincent, an island in the Caribbean. Four months later, she still can’t believe she hasn’t gotten her sister. “It’s just unheard of," Gaymes-Jeffers said. Gaymes-Jeffers says she flew to Denver from New York in early December to work out the details of her sister’s funeral with Pipkin Braswell Funeral Home. “I told him it was January 4, so you have a whole month to prepare this," she said. The funeral was set to happen in St. Vincent, and Gaymes says co-founder Alvin Braswell told her they would have the body there by then, but it never happened. “They have received paperwork but there’s no confirmation of any body," Gaymes-Jeffers said. FOX31's Nate Belt spoke with Braswell over the phone on Friday. He said there were no flights that lined up with the planned date of the service. Gaymes-Jeffers says the date was pushed to January 7, then two days later, which became too late for the family who traveled in. “Seeing that everybody’s got to leave, the best thing to do is, let’s just do a cremation," Gaymes-Jeffers said. Having the service without her sister’s body was a tough decision to make for the family. “It’s not tradition for us to have a cremation," Gaymes-Jeffers said. "Our closure and the kids' closure is to just see a casket going down.” Braswell says with the change from international shipment of the body to cremation, he needed a new death certificate and a new signature from Gaymes-Jeffers. Braswell says he got that certificate completed on January 8, but never called Gaymes-Jeffers, saying he was too busy. “I don’t think the kids will ever get closure. And my mom," Gaymes-Jeffers said. Gaymes-Jeffers says the death of her sister was traumatic enough and hopes no other family endures what she has. “The way she died and then, you know, the family, we didn’t even get a chance to just be there and put her to rest," Gaymes-Jeffers said. After FOX31 contacted Braswell, he called Gaymes-Jeffers and she says they’ve now worked out the details of the cremation. She wants to thank the community as well for helping raise more than $10,000 for the funeral expenses after our original story back in October.
