‘Significant damage’ reported after car crashes into Sangamon Co. home, catches fire
SANGAMON COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) -- Five people are displaced after a car drove into a Sangamon County home, starting a fire that eventually spread into the home's attic. Julie Plunk, Springfield's Assistant Fire Chief, said firefighters responded to the home near Stevenson Drive and Sheridan Street around 10 p.m. on Saturday. Plunk said the initial call came in as a single car accident, but when crews got on scene, they found that a car had hit and entered a house. There were two people in the vehicle, Plunk said, but no injuries have been reported. Crews were on the scene for about three hours. The fire was eventually extinguished, but there is now "significant damage" to the front of the structure. No one was home at the time of the crash, but the five people who live there will be displaced. The Red Cross has been contacted to assist the occupants. The incident remains under investigation, Plunk added.
