Secret Service detains fleeing driver after deadly crash near White House

A passenger was killed in a two-vehicle crash near the White House early Saturday, and the driver of one of the vehicles was arrested after fleeing the scene, according to the United States Park Police. The crash occurred at about 3:30 a.m. at the intersection of 17th Street and Constitution Avenue NW, D.C. , police said. The suspect was then transferred to the custody of the U.S. Park Police. The driver of the second vehicle was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. But a passenger in that vehicle was ejected during the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The body was taken by the District of Columbia Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. The U.S. Park Police Traffic Safety Unit conducted the initial investigation and crash reconstruction at the scene. Following consultation with the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia, the U.S. Park Police assumed responsibility for the crash investigation and the arrest connected to the fatal collision. The suspect remains in custody, and charges are being coordinated with the U.S. Attorney's Office, authorities said.
