SCHP: Driver charged with DUI after running from deputy, crashing into and killing another driver
A traffic stop in Berea ended in a deadly head-on collision over the holiday weekend. Authorities say the driver who fled is being charged with DUI. We were told that a deputy with the Greenville County Sheriff's Office attempted to pull over a 2011 Hyundai Sonata on Lily Street in Berea around 8:30 a.m. Saturday.Instead of pulling over, deputies said that the driver drove off and collided with another vehicle head-on in the area of Lily Street and Lora Lane.Both drivers were taken to the hospital for treatment. The driver who fled the deputy, identified as James Noah Moffitt, was later arrested. The driver of the other vehicle died.Keep up with what's happening around our area by downloading the WYFF News 4 app on the App Store or Google Play.On Monday, July 6, the Greenville County Coroner's Office identified the victim as 54-year-old James Madison Garrett.The South Carolina Highway Patrol said Moffitt was charged with felony DUI with death, failure to stop with death, simple possession of marijuana, and transporting an alcoholic beverage with a broken seal.The Greenville County Sheriff's Office, the Greenville County Coroner's Office, and South Carolina Highway Patrol are investigating.
