School used as landing site for pair injured in Mount Vernon accident involving tree

MOUNT VERNON, Ky. (FOX 56) — Two people were flown to a Lexington hospital on Tuesday morning after crashing into a tree in Mount Vernon, with first responders using a nearby school to retrieve the crash victims. The Mount Vernon Fire Department posted on Facebook that around 7:30 a.m. on Feb. 17, crews were dispatched in response to an accident in the area of Rose Hill Road involving a vehicle and a tree. "Because of the accident’s location, a landing zone was established at Rockcastle County High School to allow for safe and efficient air transport," Mount Vernon fire officials said. Rockcastle Schools announced the impromptu landing on social media, noting that the emergency landing wasn't school-related. The pair were flown to the University of Kentucky Hospital, authorities said. An investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
