School bus driver charged with DUI after crash in Lenox Village neighborhood

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A school bus driver for the Metro Nashville Public Schools system is accused of driving under the influence following a crash that took place in the Lenox Village area. According to the Metro Nashville Police Department, officers were sent to the intersection of Alteras Drive and Sunnywood Drive at approximately 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 20, to respond to reports of a crash involving an MNPS school bus. Officials said a preliminary investigation indicates that the school bus driver — later identified as 75-year-old Madubiri Nwoke — hit a parked car near the intersection of Alteras Drive and Sunnywood Drive while on the way to pick up children from Shane Elementary School. After conducting field sobriety tests, officers reportedly determined that the bus driver showed signs of impairment and was intoxicated from alcohol. The school bus driver was taken into custody for driving under the influence. Meanwhile, the MNPD said an adult passenger and bus assistant complained of dizziness due to the impact of the crash. Officials said the passenger received treatment at the scene and refused transport to the hospital. MNPS transportation supervisors and school security were also notified and responded to the scene, per authorities. A spokesperson for MNPS sent News 2 the following statement following the crash: Police said Nwoke was booked into jail after a blood draw for laboratory analysis.
