San Benito CISD identifies student killed in crash

SAN BENITO, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The San Benito Consolidated Independent School District on Monday identified the student who was killed in an auto-pedestrian crash earlier this month. San Benito school officials said Cobretti Rae Rodriguez, 17, died in Harlingen. At about 11:30 p.m. on March 1, Harlingen police responded to the 2800 block of North Expressway 83 regarding a person, later identified as Rodriguez, who was hit by a vehicle. Emergency medical services arrived at the scene and transported Rodriguez to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries. Officials said Rodriguez was a member of the Greyhound Athletic Program and a junior at San Benito High School. In Rodriguez's honor, the scoreboard at Bobby Morrow Stadium will remain illuminated throughout services scheduled for Monday and Tuesday. "San Benito Schools extends its heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Cobretti Rae Rodriguez, a junior at San Benito High School and a member of the Greyhound Athletic Program. His contributions and the kindness he shared with everyone who knew him will leave a lasting legacy of friendship, loyalty, and compassion," San Benito CISD said in a statement. Visitations will be held on Monday from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Buck Ashcraft San Benito Funeral Home, located at 1400 77 Business. A rosary will take place at 7 p.m. during visitations at the funeral home. On Tuesday, a mass is scheduled at 10 a.m. at the St. Benedict Catholic Church, located at 351 South Bowie Street.
