Salem Mercedes driver accused of DUII, high-speed fatal crash

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A Salem man was arrested on Saturday and accused of causing a high-speed crash while intoxicated that killed another driver. Salem police said they responded just before 3:30 a.m. to reports of a two-car crash on Lancaster Drive NE near Weathers Street. When they arrived, officers found the driver of a gray Ford Mustang — identified as 54-year-old Daniel Lewis — dead at the scene. The passenger, 31-year-old Kayla Meyer, was injured and taken to Salem Hospital. "Witnesses reported seeing a white Mercedes SUV driving at a high rate of speed prior to crashing into the Mustang," the Salem Police Department said in a press release. "The Mercedes reportedly fled the scene following the crash." The driver of the Mercedes was identified as 35-year-old Romel Villarreal, who was located a few blocks from the crash site, police said. He was initially taken to Salem Hospital for treatment, but was ultimately arrested. Villarreal was booked into the Marion County Jail and faces charges that include second-degree manslaughter, third-degree assault, reckless driving, reckless endangering, failure to perform duties of a driver and DUII.
