Safety concerns on Central Avenue underscored by deadly pedestrian collision.
A pedestrian was tragically killed on Central Avenue in Colonie after being hit by a vehicle, an area with a history of accidents. The incident occurred at 1157 Central Avenue where it is believed that 77-year-old Cornelius Morrison was attempting to cross the street when the collision happened. The driver was sober and cooperating with authorities. Chief Michael Romano of the Fuller Road Fire Department has witnessed numerous accidents in the area over the years, involving various types of vehicles and pedestrians. While some accident sites have memorials, many crashes are non-fatal, though unfortunately fatalities occur as well. The corridor sees heavy traffic flow daily, with some local business owners noting the frequency of accidents. The Capital Region Transportation Council has been evaluating Central Avenue since 2024, expressing concerns about traffic speed, pedestrian, and cyclist safety. Suggestions include using crosswalks when walking across Central Avenue and wearing bright clothing for visibility, especially at night. Additional lighting on the road is also recommended. Efforts to improve safety continue, as investigators work on the ongoing case of the recent tragedy.
