Rollover crash involving 8 teens leaves 1 dead in San Bernardino County
A 17-year-old boy was killed in a single-vehicle crash that injured six other teens over the weekend in San Bernardino County, officials announced. The June 7 incident occurred just before 2:40 a.m. at the intersection of Rancho and Lilac roads in Adelanto, according to a San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department news release. Investigators said eight teens were inside a 2013 Dodge Charger traveling east on Rancho Road at high speeds when the driver lost control near Lilac Road, causing the vehicle to leave the roadway and roll onto its side. At least one of the teens was ejected from the vehicle, investigators said. Emergency personnel from the Sheriff’s Department’s Adelanto station responded to the scene. Seven teenagers suffering a range of injuries were transported to hospitals. One of them, an unidentified 17-year-old, later died from his injuries. Investigators with the Sheriff’s Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team took over the case and closed the road for about six hours while processing the scene and interviewing witnesses. The deadly crash comes a little more than two months after another 17-year-old, identified as Michael Zavala, was killed in a collision involving a semi-truck. The Tehachapi resident reportedly veered into oncoming traffic and collided with the semi on Highway 395, about six miles from Sunday’s crash. He was airlifted to Loma Linda University Medical Center, where he later died. The semi-truck driver was also taken to a hospital in unknown condition. The most recent crash remains under investigation. Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is asked to contact SBSD Deputy D. McCarter at the Apple Valley Sheriff’s Station at 760-240-7400.
