Racer evacuated to hospital after high-speed crash: Pikes Peak International Hill Climb

(PIKES PEAK, Colo.) — Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (PPIHC) competitor Patrick Culligan was involved in a high-speed vehicle accident during the race on Sunday, June 21, according to PPIHC. He was taken to the hospital and is stable as of 1:15 p.m. According to PPIHC, Culligan, who raced under the number 720, was evacuated to UC Health for further evaluation. He is reportedly awake, alert, and in stable condition. The annual race covers 12.42 miles, with 156 turns on the way to the 12,115 summit of Pikes Peak, according to PPIHC. The race is notoriously challenging due to the thinning air as the drivers climb, slowing reflexes and sapping mental and muscle strength, as well as robbing internal combustion engines of up to 30% of their power.
