Pottsville man suspected of DUI in Berks County crash that killed passenger

A 23-year-old man died after a suspected DUI crash early Saturday morning in Berks County, according to Pennsylvania State Police. Troopers said the crash happened around 1:56 a.m. on Route 183 near North 4th Street in Bernville Borough. Investigators said a black Tesla sedan driven by a 23-year-old man from Pottsville was traveling southbound when it crossed into the northbound lane and struck a tree. Police identified the passenger as Keenan Cryts, 23, who suffered severe injuries in the crash. Cryts was transported to a nearby trauma center, where authorities said he later died from his injuries Sunday night at Reading Hospital. State police say the driver, whose identity they have not yet released, is suspected of operating the vehicle under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. The investigation remains ongoing. According to investigators, the driver was believed to have been wearing a seatbelt, while Cryts was not restrained at the time of the crash. The Pennsylvania State Police were assisted at the scene by local fire and EMS crews, along with the Berks County Coroner’s Office and the Berks County District Attorney’s Office.
