Police release details, but no ID yet, in fatal Vernon tractor-trailer crash on I-84
VERNON — Two days after a tractor-trailer driver was killed in a fiery two-truck crash on Interstate 84 in Vernon, police did not identify the deceased driver. The crash occurred at 11:16 p.m. Wednesday, according to an accident report released Friday by Connecticut State Police. Babikir Abdelrahman, a 56-year old Indiana man, had parked his Volvo semi-truck in the right shoulder of the eastbound lanes of I-84, about a mile from Exit 67. The driver of a Freightliner Cascadia tractor-trailer plowed into Abdelrahman's truck shortly before midnight, crashing "for an unknown reason," and catching his truck on fire, according to the accident report. Abdelrahman was uninjured and declined medical care, but the Cascadia's driver was pronounced dead on the scene, police said. Typically, state police can identify the victims of fatal crashes in accident reports, but the identity and biographical information of the Cascadia driver, as well as his cause of death, are listed as "unknown." Police are still investigating and are asking anyone with information about the crash to contact Trooper Casey Audet at 860-896-3200, ext. 8065, or by email at [email protected].
