Police investigate crash, find dead body nearby in Fort Wayne neighborhood

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) Fort Wayne police strung yellow tape around an area in a neighborhood in southeast Fort Wayne following reports of a disturbance Thursday involving a car that crashed. Officers then found a dead body in a nearby field. The Fort Wayne Police Department said in an update later in the afternoon that investigators are still working to learn whether the body found was connected to the initial disturbance. Officers were called to the 2500 block of Stardale Drive after noon Thursday. When police were still on the way to the scene, reports came in of shots being fired. By the time police got there, some of the people involved had fled the area and a K-9 team worked to track them down. Officers found the car crashed into the side of a parked pickup truck near the Village Park Apartments. The reported disturbance is believed to have been related to the crash; a witness said the car may have been stolen, but that was not confirmed by police. Meanwhile, in a field south of the crash, the K-9 team found someone with a gunshot wound. The person was pronounced dead at the scene. It's unclear if the person was involved in the initial disturbance. A WANE 15 videographer at the scene saw police talk to a man who was then put into a squad car. Once police get it all sorted out, they will provide an update.
