Police gather outside hospital following trooper's death from injuries sustained in Route 1 crash
Massachusetts State Police troopers and Boston police officers gathered outside a hospital in the city on Wednesday morning after a colleague succumbed to injuries sustained in a crash on Route 1.State police confirmed the trooper, who works out of the Danvers barracks, was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, where he was later pronounced dead. The wrong-way driver died at the scene in Lynnfield. Neither of their names has been released.Police gathered on Charles Street in apparent anticipation of the fallen trooper's dignified transfer. Col. Geoffrey Noble, who leads the Massachusetts State Police, was seen at the hospital around 6:15 a.m."The Trooper was responding to reports of a wrong-way driver and put himself in harm’s way to protect others," Gov. Maura Healey wrote in a statement. "This act of service and courage is what our State Police are called to do every day. They show up ready to face danger so the rest of us can be safe. Today, Massachusetts is mourning one of those heroes."
