Pittsfield man dies in wrong-way crash on I-87 in New York
SAUGERTIES, N.Y. (WWLP) - A Pittsfield man has died in New York after allegedly driving in the wrong direction and striking multiple vehicles. The New York State Police stated that at approximately 9:11 p.m. on Sunday, troopers were called to the town of Saugerties regarding a report of a wrong-way driver on I-87 northbound between Exit 19 and Exit 20. A preliminary investigation determined that a 2025 Toyota was traveling southbound in the northbound lane when it struck three vehicles traveling northbound. The driver and only occupant of the Toyota, identified as 42-year-old Joseph Mensah-Otoo of Pittsfield, Massachusetts, was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene. Six other individuals were injured as a result of the crash, including two 19-year-old men from Dalton, Mass., and a 19-year-old man from Hinsdale, Mass. All were brought to the hospital for treatment and are expected to recover. The investigation of the crash remains ongoing.
