Pilot rescued after plane crashes into pond near Quabbin Reservoir in New Salem

NEW SALEM, Mass. (WWLP) - A pilot was rescued and flown to the hospital Friday evening after a small plane crashed into the water near the Quabbin Reservoir. According to state and local officials, emergency crews were called around 7:40 p.m. after a witness reported a plane had gone into the water and a person was seen calling for help. Responders located the crash near Route 122 and Fishing Area 2. Firefighters maintained contact with the pilot while a Massachusetts State Police trooper, equipped with a flotation device and tether line, entered the water and rescued the man. He was then pulled safely back to shore. An ambulance transported the pilot to Orange Airport, where he was then flown by medical helicopter to UMass Memorial Medical Center. State police said troopers from multiple units, including the Marine Unit, Air Wing, and detective units from Hampshire and Franklin counties, were called to the scene after receiving a report of a plane crash in the area of O’Laughlin Pond, north of the Quabbin Reservoir. Officials said the pilot is believed to have been the only person on board. No other injuries were reported. The aircraft remains submerged and will be removed at a later time. The FAA has been notified and is expected to investigate. Authorities said no additional information is available at this time.
