Pedestrian struck and killed by train in Encinitas

ENCINITAS, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) -- A pedestrian was hit and killed by a train in northern San Diego County Thursday afternoon, and police are asking drivers to avoid the area. San Diego Sheriff's deputies responded after 1 p.m. on Thursday to reports of a train and pedestrian collision at D and E streets at South Coast Highway 101 in Encinitas. SkyFOX/KUSI in the Sky was overhead as a heavy police presence was seen blocking the intersection and a Pacific Surfliner was stopped on the train tracks. The sheriff's office is alerting drivers to expect traffic delays and to avoid the area at this time. All COASTER train traffic was stopped due to the police activity in Encinitas, according to NCTD Service Alerts. Southbound passengers from Oceanside and Carlsbad can take a Breeze bus to all COASTER stations. Check back for updates on this breaking story
