Pedestrian killed in crash on U.S. 401 overpass in Raleigh; roads closed for rush hour

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — A pedestrian was killed in an early morning crash in Raleigh, prompting major road closures during the Monday morning commute, police said. According to the Raleigh Police Department, officers responded to a vehicle crash involving a pedestrian around 3:40 a.m. near the 2900 block of South Saunders Street. CBS 17 crews at the scene observed a heavily damaged vehicle on the U.S. 401 (South Saunders Street) overpass near South Wilmington Street. The car appeared to have significant front-end damage. The pedestrian died at the scene, according to police. South Saunders Street has reopened to traffic, but South Wilmington Street remains closed through the morning rush hour. The North Carolina Department of Transportation reports that the roadway is expected to reopen by 11 a.m.
