Oxycodone and alcohol found in driver's system in fatal I-95 wrong-way collision

The Florida Highway Patrol reports that after conducting toxicology tests, they found that the driver responsible for a fatal wrong-way accident on I-95 in Brevard County had elevated levels of oxycodone and alcohol in her system. The 34-year-old driver from Cocoa had a blood alcohol level of 0.053, which is below Florida's legal limit of 0.08, but impairment was still a contributing factor in the collision. The tragedy occurred in September 2025 near Wickham Road, where the driver turned the wrong way onto the northbound lanes after making a U-turn at Viera Boulevard. The ensuing head-on collision with another vehicle led to a chain reaction involving eight cars, resulting in the death of two individuals, including the driver, and serious injuries to six others. The impaired driver traveled the wrong way for approximately 2 1/2 miles before the crash, and the lack of detection systems on ramps due to her U-turn in the lanes contributed to the incident going unnoticed. Those affected by accidents involving impaired drivers can seek assistance and resources from Mothers Against Drunk Driving Central Florida by contacting 1-877-623-3435.
