Overturned truck dangling over freeway spills concrete, snarls traffic in Boyle Heights

A loaded concrete truck overturned and became stuck halfway over the edge of an elevated freeway ramp in Boyle Heights on Saturday morning, spilling wet concrete and triggering a major rescue response, authorities said. The crash was reported around 9:14 a.m. on the northbound 5 Freeway transition to the westbound 10 Freeway near Cesar Chavez Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department and California Highway Patrol. The crash prompted a SigAlert and widespread lane closures across the East Los Angeles Interchange, with authorities warning of major traffic delays through the afternoon. Officials said the cement mixer ended up straddling a K-rail barrier on the elevated ramp, leaving the truck partially suspended over the edge above train tracks and roadways below, prompting crews to shut down traffic and rail lines in the area. A photo from the scene shows the large cement mixer lying upside down on the elevated ramp while firefighters, CHP officers and a heavy-duty tow truck work nearby to stabilize the vehicle. According to CHP Central Los Angeles, the westbound 10 Freeway transition to the northbound 5 Freeway and the I-10 Fast Track lanes between the 710 Freeway and Alameda Street were closed in both directions as crews worked the scene. Only one lane remained open on northbound I-5 near the interchange, and the closures were expected to remain in place until about 2 p.m. Luis Zuniga and Sofia Pop Perez contributed to this report.
