Out-of-state skier dies following crash at Breckenridge Ski Resort

DENVER (KDVR) -- A skier who was visiting from out of state died at Breckenridge Ski Resort on Wednesday, following a crash. The Summit County Sheriff's Office said Thursday that deputies responded to the resort after receiving a report at about 1:30 p.m. that CPR was in progress, following a skier crash in the Lake Chutes, a double-black diamond, hike-to area on Peak 8. The skier, identified as a man from out of state, was wearing a helmet and was alone when he fell, according to the sheriff's office, which said no other skiers or riders were involved in the crash. A bystander who witnessed the crash contacted Breckenridge Ski Patrol, which responded and provided medical care and transport to the Peak 8 First Aid Room, where he was pronounced dead, SCSO said. The sheriff's office said an investigation into the death is ongoing and that "details may change." “Our mountain community feels these losses deeply,” said SCSO Sheriff Jaime FitzSimons, in a statement. “We extend our sincere condolences to the skier’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.” The identity of the man may be released by the Summit County Coroner's Office at a later time, according to the sheriff's office, which said the coroner's office will ultimately be responsible for determining the official cause and manner of death.
