One killed in fatal crash on State Street in Alton
ALTON — One person was killed late Sunday in a fiery crash in the 2200 block of State Street in Alton. The person who died had not been identified as of Monday morning. According to a news release issued Monday morning, officers were dispatched about 11:22 p.m. Sunday to the 2200 block of State Street for a traffic crash involving a vehicle on fire. When officers arrived, they found a pickup truck “fully engulfed in flames” in the front yard of a residence. After the Alton Fire Department extinguished the fire, a single body was discovered inside the vehicle. The Madison County coroner’s office is working to identify the person who died and determine the cause and manner of death. No other injuries were reported. According to police, the preliminary investigation shows the vehicle was northbound on State Street when it left the road, struck a parked, unoccupied vehicle and then collided with a tree. The Alton Police Department, with assistance from the Madison County coroner’s office, is continuing to investigate the crash.
