One injured in crash involving Lorain police cruiser

ELYRIA TOWNSHIP — A crash involving a Lorain police cruiser left one person injured and closed the intersection of West Ridge Road and state Route 113 on Wednesday. At 3:17 p.m. on Wednesday, the Ohio State Highway Patrol responded to a crash involving a Lorain Police Department cruiser and a 2016 silver Chrysler 300. According to a press release from the Highway Patrol, a prisoner being transported in the back of the cruiser sustained "non-life threatening" injuries and was taken to the hospital. The driver of the Chrysler 300 was treated for minor injuries at the scene, and the Lorain police officer was uninjured. The Highway Patrol said that troopers' preliminary investigation found that police cruiser was heading south on West Ridge Road and the officer activated lights and sirens before entering the intersection. As the cruiser went through the intersection, it was struck by the Chrysler 300. The release did not say which car had a green light at the time of the crash. It appeared at the scene that the sedan had struck the cruiser on its back driver's side. The front of the gray sedan was badly damaged, while the Lorain cruiser had its back bumper knocked partially off and was spun off the southwest corner of the road, resting in a small snowbank. The State Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. Both lanes of Route 113 west of the intersection were closed for over 45 minutes after the crash, while the southbound lane of West Ridge Road was closed for the same period.
