One dead, four injured in two-vehicle crash in Madera

An 18-year-old woman is dead, and four others are injured after a crash at the intersection of Avenue 17 and Road 28 1/2 in Madera late Tuesday night. CHP Madera says the Merced Communications Center received a call at 9:46 p.m. Tuesday, reporting a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Avenue 17 and Road 28 1/2. A preliminary investigation found an 18-year-old woman from Madera was driving a white 2018 Chevrolet Malibu eastbound on Avenue 17 as she approached Road 28 1/2. At the same time, a 25-year-old woman from Madera was driving a black 2019 Jeep Wrangler southbound on Road 28 1/2 toward Avenue 17. CHP said Road 28 1/2 traffic has the right-of-way at that location, while posted stop signs control Avenue 17 traffic. Investigators said the Chevrolet driver failed to stop at the stop sign and entered the intersection, directly into the path of the Jeep. After the collision, both vehicles traveled southeast towards a residence. CHP said the Jeep overturned and both vehicles came to rest on the southeast corner of the intersection. Before stopping, both vehicles were damaged after they hit a parked vehicle and a support beam at the residence. The 18-year-old driver of the Chevrolet was pronounced dead at the scene despite the immediate response of emergency personnel. A 19-year-old male passenger in the Chevrolet suffered major injuries, and a 21-year-old female passenger in the Chevrolet suffered minor injuries. Both were taken to the hospital. The driver of the Jeep and one passenger also sustained minor injuries. CHP says alcohol and/or drugs are not suspected to be a factor.
