One dead after early morning crash on I-99 in Blair County, investigation underway

BLAIR COUNTY, Pa. (WTAJ) -- An Altoona man has died following an early Saturday morning crash along Interstate 99. Crews were called out to I-99 around 4 a.m. near mile marker 54 on reports of an accident with possible ejection, closing down the highway at Exit 61 in Port Matilda and diverting traffic. Troopers say the crash occurred as a Honda Civic rode southbound down I-99 before hitting a disabled car in the right lane. The car was reportedly disabled after striking a guide rail in a previous crash. The collision caused a chain reaction, causing the disabled vehicle to make impact with another before coming to rest along the lanes of I-99. They add that the operator of the disabled vehicle was not in the vehicle when it was hit, but was actually walking across the interstate. According to Blair County Coroner Ray Benton, his office was called out to the scene shortly after to investigate and later determined that 23-year-old Andrew Wolford died from blunt force injuries following the crash. Benton said an autopsy is scheduled for Sunday in Windber. The crash is still under investigation by the Pennsylvania State Police.
