Omaha residents demand action following three pedestrian accidents on Tuesday

Activists are urging for action following three pedestrian accidents in the Omaha metro on Tuesday evening, including two that were fatal, making this year the most deadly for pedestrians in the last twenty years. One incident involved a collision with a 55-year-old woman in a motorized wheelchair at 59th Street and Ames Avenue, while another resulted in the death of a 48-year-old bicyclist near Hanscom Park at 32nd and Hickory streets. The organization Bike Walk Nebraska is dedicated to preventing such tragedies. Cait Dumas-Hein, the Associate Director, emphasized the human impact of these incidents and highlighted the need for a collective effort beyond just pedestrians and drivers, including city officials, engineers, and lawmakers. Nebraska Department of Transportation reported a 67% increase in pedestrian fatalities this year compared to 2024, underscoring the urgency for comprehensive solutions. Nebraska state Sen. Ashlei Spivey also stressed the importance of addressing safety concerns, such as those on Ames Avenue, and emphasized the need for proactive measures to enhance community mobility. Ultimately, advocates are pushing for a collaborative approach to enhance safety and reduce accidents, recognizing the shared responsibility of all stakeholders.
