Official warns of potential midair collision at Hollywood Burbank Airport
At a recent National Transportation Safety Board meeting in Washington, NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy raised concerns about the risk of midair collisions at Hollywood Burbank Airport. Commercial airlines had alerted about the potential for aircraft accidents due to the airport's characteristics, such as short runways and tight airspace. The airport is categorized as a busy Class C airport with a high volume of both helicopter and airplane traffic. Despite warnings from airlines, Homendy expressed frustration that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) was not addressing these concerns promptly. The FAA spokesperson responded that following a collision near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, the agency took immediate action to enhance safety protocols, including using AI tools to identify high-traffic areas like Van Nuys and Hollywood Burbank airports. Changes to the Van Nuys traffic pattern showed a decrease in conflicts with arriving aircraft at Burbank. Hollywood Burbank had experienced a close call in 2023 when two planes were within dangerous proximity due to a control error. The investigation highlighted distractions and deficiencies in monitoring equipment at the airport. This report is a collaboration with City News Service.
