Off-duty cop pulls person from burning car after dramatic crash
An off-duty New York City police officer responded to a serious car crash and pulled a person out of an overturned vehicle in Hauppauge, New York, recently. Footage released by the NYPD shows the collision between an SUV and a sedan at the intersection of Route 347 and Route 111 on February 4. CCTV footage then shows officer Joseph Wetzel, who the NYPD said was battling stage-three colorectal cancer, running toward the scene. The video cuts to bodycam footage in which Wetzel tells local police he’s off-duty and informs them of a motorist still stuck in one of the vehicles. He later tells the officer after hearing the crash he ran and broke a window to pull a person out. In a Facebook post, NYPD wrote, “For NY’s Finest, there is no such thing as off-duty when someone needs help. Officer Joseph Wetzel was off-duty when he rescued a man trapped inside a burning, overturned vehicle. He showed true heroism and bravery all while continuing his battle against cancer.” According to local news outlets, three people were transported from the scene, including a motorist from the sedan who was seriously injured.
