Ocala man arrested after troopers say 90 mph speed caused deadly crash

An Ocala man has been arrested in connection with a deadly crash that killed a woman in Marion County earlier this year, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.Troopers say De'Shawn Vonkei Williams, 18, was taken into custody on Wednesday. He is charged with one count of vehicular homicide and six counts of reckless driving.The charges stem from a crash that happened just before 5:30 p.m. on April 19 at the intersection of Pine Road and Hemlock Road.According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Williams was driving a 2021 Infiniti Q50 north on Pine Road while a 2017 Hyundai Elantra was traveling west on Hemlock Road.Investigators said the Hyundai entered the intersection as the Infiniti was approaching, causing the two vehicles to collide.The impact sent the Infiniti off the roadway, where it hit a utility pole and a metal fence before coming to a stop.The Hyundai rotated onto the shoulder, and the driver was ejected from the vehicle, landing in a nearby yard.The front-seat passenger in the Hyundai, a 48-year-old Ocala woman, was pronounced dead at the scene.The Hyundai's 38-year-old driver suffered critical injuries. FHP tells WESH 2 as of June 26, that man is still being treated at the hospital and remains in critical condition.Troopers say the man's wife was the woman who died in the crash.Williams, the man arrested, and his 21-year-old passenger had minor injuries.According to FHP, the investigation determined Williams was traveling about 90 mph in a posted 30 mph zone as he approached the intersection. Troopers said his excessive speed and reckless driving led to the fatal crash.Williams is out of jail on bond.
