A 60-year-old Newberg man has been identified as the motorcyclist who died in a single-vehicle crash on southbound Interstate 5 near the Marquam Bridge on Friday. Preliminary information indicates Jason A. Doherty was riding a 2002 Harley Davidson motorcycle with a sidecar southbound on I-5 when, after negotiating a left turn off the Marquam Bridge, the motorcycle suddenly veered at a sharp angle out of the lane of travel for an unknown reason and struck the jersey barrier. There are also fake DOT labels being sold to put on these unsafe helmets." The Portland Police Traffic Division Major Crash Team investigated the crash, which shut down southbound I-5 south of the Marquam Bridge at the time of the crash as traffic was routed from the Marquam Bridge onto northbound I-405. The traffic investigation continues, and investigators are asking anyone with information who has not already spoken to police to submit a tip through the online portal. The case number is 26-178327. Police said the crash was Portland’s 20th traffic-related death this year and the second in a span of 25 hours. It was the eighth this year involving a motorcycle or gas-powered scooter.
