Neighbors plead for safety after third fatal crash in Linden
COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) -- The Columbus Division of Police is investigating another fatal hit-and-run this past weekend on Cleveland Avenue. The crash happened on Saturday night in a portion of Cleveland Avenue, a location the city has been trying to make safer for pedestrians. Amy Price has lived in her Cleveland Avenue home for 13 years. She said several crashes have happened in her block, including one that took out her ramp, and another that took out her neighbor's fence, and then the hit-and-run over the weekend. “Something’s got to give because of all the accidents that’s been here," she said. Price's surveillance cameras caught some of what happened. She said the person had almost made it across Cleveland Avenue when they were hit. “I would tell them please come to the cops, turn yourself in, let them know why you left," Price said. The person was hit just north of the intersection of Cleveland Avenue and Republic Avenue, according to police. At that intersection, there is a crosswalk that lights up above when the button is pushed, referred to as an enhanced crosswalk. The report from the police did not say if the victim was in the crosswalk. “People will use them and drivers doesn’t stop, even when they’re red, they keep on going," Price said. While an NBC4 crew was at the intersection on Monday, a family had to wait until traffic in both directions stopped for the enhanced crosswalk. Those types of crosswalks have been added by the City of Columbus and Franklin County to more than a dozen locations along Cleveland Avenue as part of the Walk Safe on Cleveland Initiative. Price said she wants drivers to pay attention and slow down. “A lot of people around here just don't care and I wish people would be more like me and try and tell people, I have yelled off my porch, ‘Slow down’ and all that, I mean, it's terrible," she said. "Unfortunately, I have seen it too many times, the accidents, the hit and runs, it's bad here.” Saturday's deadly hit-and-run was at least the second on Cleveland Avenue this year. The other hit-and-run crash happened in January. In March, another pedestrian was killed by a car along the street in March; the driver in that incident stayed at the scene.
