Navy discovers connection between intense operations against Houthis and Truman Strike Group accidents

In May, the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier experienced the loss of an F-18 fighter jet due to a malfunctioning arresting wire, which occurred during a high-stress deployment involving operations against the Houthis in Yemen. A recent Navy investigation report emphasized the importance of examining how a Carrier Strike Group responds to challenges during combat operations. During the deployment from September 2024 to May 2025, the carrier strike group faced various incidents, including friendly fire, collision with a merchant ship, and the loss of two F-18s. These incidents resulted in no fatalities, but there were several close calls. Despite the challenges faced, the Navy remains committed to learning from these events and improving readiness. The investigations cited the need for better adherence to Navy processes, especially in combat settings, to prevent avoidable mishaps. The incidents collectively cost the Navy approximately $164 million.
