Murder charges for driver in fatal West Sacramento DUI crash

(FOX40.COM) — A man who was allegedly drunk behind the wheel before a two-car crash that killed a Davis driver now faces murder charges. The Yolo County District Attorney's Office has filed amended charges against Sahil Kanwal, a 28-year-old who West Sacramento Police say was responsible for the January crash that killed 31-year-old Chloe Borders in West Sacramento. The crash occurred Jan. 25 at 1:40 p.m. on West Capitol Avenue near the Enterprise exit, police said. The victim was transported to a local hospital and later died from her injuries. In court documents, prosecutors alleged that Kanwal's blood alcohol content was almost four times the legal limit. Prosecutors initially charged Kanwal with one count of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and one count of driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs causing injury, with enhancements for a high blood alcohol level, infliction of great bodily injury and engaging in violent conduct that indicates a danger to society. Now, the district attorney's office is raising the stakes. In a new filing, the office charged Kanwal with an additional count of murder — which requires prosecutors to prove the driver "did willfully and unlawfully kill a human being ... with malice aforethought."
