Motorcyclist killed in Passaic County crash
WAYNE TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Passaic County) — A Montclair man was killed early Friday after his motorcycle struck a guardrail on the ramp from Route 23 South to Interstate 80 East in Wayne Township, according to police. Police said officers responded at approximately 1:04 a.m. July 10 to a report of a single-motorcycle crash on the highway ramp. According to the Wayne Police Department, Nicholas E. Coombs, 27, of Montclair, was operating a 2005 Yamaha motorcycle while traveling from Route 23 South onto the Route 80 East ramp when the motorcycle struck the guardrail along the right shoulder. Police said Coombs was ejected from the motorcycle and sustained serious injuries. He was found unresponsive at the scene and was pronounced dead at Saint Joseph's University Medical Center. The Wayne Police Traffic Bureau assumed control of the investigation and was assisted at the scene by the Passaic County Sheriff's Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit. The New Jersey State Police also assisted with the ramp closure, which remained in effect until approximately 7:20 a.m. The crash remains under investigation by the Wayne Police Traffic Bureau.
