Motorcyclist killed in Newtown crash that closed Hawleyville Road, police say

NEWTOWN — A motorcyclist was killed Monday afternoon in a crash that closed Hawleyville Road for hours, police say. In a release, Newtown police Lt. Scott Smith said witnesses called dispatch at 5:49 p.m. reporting a crash between a motorcycle and a box truck on Hawleyville Road in the area of North Ridge Drive. Smith said Newtown police officers, the Hawleyville Fire Department and Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps responded to the scene. He said the operator of the motorcycle was pronounced dead on scene, but did not identify them. Hawleyville Road remained closed until about 10 p.m. while officers investigated, Smith said. The crash is under investigation by the detective bureau and accident reconstruction team, he said. The road, also known as state Route 25, had been closed in both directions between Barnabas and Currituck roads, according to the state Department of Transportation.
