Motorcyclist killed after crash on US-189 in Provo Canyon

PROVO, Utah (ABC4) — One person is dead after crashing into a guardrail and being thrown from his motorcycle on US-189 in Provo Canyon. Only one lane is open in each direction. According to the Utah Department of Transportation, there is a crash on westbound E Provo Canyon Road, which is US Route 189. Initial reports from UDOT stated that southbound Provo Canyon Road was impacted, but they have since stated it is westbound traffic. According to Utah Highway Patrol, a male motorcyclist in his twenties was traveling on eastbound US-189, shortly before 7:30 p.m. He was reportedly driving too fast and lost control around milepost 13 (near Vivian Park, crashing into the center median and being thrown from his motorcycle into the westbound lanes. A life-flight helicopter was dispatched to the scene. Unfortunately, the motorcyclist was declared deceased on scene, and the life-flight was canceled. At this time, officials have not posted the motorcyclist's identity. UDOT says that all but one lane in each direction is closed. UHP predicts that eastbound closures will be in place until around 9:00 p.m. and westbound closures will last until around 11:30 p.m. A large number of emergency personnel are on scene, including incident management, law enforcement officers, and medical responders. Travelers should avoid the area, if possible, and expect heavy delays.
