Motorcyclist dies in crash on I-81 South in Cortland
CORTLAND, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) -- A Watertown motorcyclist died in a Saturday morning crash on the I-81 South in Cortland. 26-year-old Christopher Messerlie was traveling south on I-81 when he ran into a guard rail, according to New York State Police. Around 10:23 a.m., state police came out to find the motorcycle about half a mile south of exit 52 (Cortland). Messerlie was pronounced dead on the scene. At the time of the accident, Messerlie was driving a 2001 Victory motorcycle, a statement from NYSP noted. Both lanes of I-81 south remained closed as authorities investigated, causing an almost two-mile-long backup of traffic. Drivers were directed off I-81 at exit 52. An investigation surrounding the crash remains ongoing.
